What is 15/15?

The 15/15 Film Festival is a multi-location event based in Australia but coordinated to run simultaneously across the world. It is held annually in mid-March in 27 international locations.

The festival provides an excellent creative opportunity for filmmakers to make a short film of 15 minutes or less -all in under 15 hours!

There are very few limitations on entry. The closing date is usually three days before Filming Day, but anyone can enter the festival regardless of their age, background or level of filmmaking experience. The only requirement is that entries meet the festival's guidelines:

  • You must make your film between 08:00 - 23:00 on Filming Day
  • Films must be no longer than 15 mins (including title and credits)
  • Films must contain the secret object in 85% or more of your shots
  • You must use the secret quote in an interesting way at least once

Festival History

The 15/15 Film Festival began in Victoria, Australia, in 2001 with only 13 participant submissions, but it screened to a sold-out cinema of 650 people.

Amadeo Marquez-Perez, a Latrobe University Graduate in Sociology and Documentary Filmmaking, collaborated with Jacqueline Erasmus, an award winning independent short-filmmaker, to bring to Australia a festival that would fill a gaping hole in the film industry.

2008 is the eighth year of the festival, last year receiving over 250 entries which screened to audiences totaling over 9000 people. As in previous years, representatives from the Australian Film Commission and Film Victoria will attend the Melbourne Gala Night to select 11 of the films for inclusion in the AFC's Australian Short Film collection.

As the festival continues to grow, it is our goal to be part of a global film community. Every year we vow the next will be bigger and better again, providing ample opportunity for emerging filmmakers from every country.

The 15/15 Film Festival has been privileged over the years to have supported emerging but now well-known filmmakers such as Melbourne's Genevieve Bailey, Jarrah Gurrie and Murray Lorden. Scott Ryan, a keen participant in 15/15,  went on to write, direct and act in his film ‘The Magician’ (2005). Murali K. Thalluri, who participated in the 2004 festival, later directed his first feature ‘2:37’ (2006) which was nominated in the 2006 AFI Awards. Countless other participants are continuing to build film careers world wide. Browse past films to see their work.

Judges & Special Guests

Each year a panel of esteemed industry luminaries is invited to judge the best films of the 15/15 Film Festival.

An important part of the festival is the feedback filmmakers receive from the judging process. Having worked hard to create a film that can compete technically and creatively with other films, getting some good feedback about what worked and what didn't helps prepare for next time.

The judges for 15/15's major awards in 2008 were:

  • Justine Beltrame - AFI Manager
  • Mat Govoni - Filmmaker and Lecturer
  • Lisa Maza - Film and Theatre Actor
  • Owen Leong - Visual Artist

The 15/15 Film Festival would like to thank the finalist judges for their tme and commitment to the festival. All judges will be present at the Gala Awards night.
